Good Morning, Middlemarch
by Charlotte Reads Classics
I feed too much on the inward sources; I live too much with the dead. My mind is something like the ghost of an ancient, wandering about the world and trying mentally to construct it as it used to be, in spite of ruin and confusing changes.
I started reading Middlemarch this morning and adored this quotation from the truly terrible catch that is Mr. Casaubon. I thought it was particularly amusing in light of yesterday’s post…
Middlemarch is a GE I’ve yet to read – but such lovely prose makes me want to start straight away!
It’s one of my all time favourites š Great writing and a very all-encompassing sort of plot.
I’ve read about four chapters now – really enjoying it the second time around. I don’t know what to make of Dorothea – she’s interesting, and I sort of identify with some of the things she says, but at the same time she can be so frustrating. Rather regret saying I identify with her. A little part of her, that is. The good bits š
I won’t hold you to it if you change your mind š I like her too for the most part but I don’t think I’d feel the same if I met her in real life… But I think she always has good intentions which makes her endearing.
I remember the first time you read it and was sad that you weren’t keen. I always have it in my head as quite high on my list of favourites, but I’ve only read it once and that was about eight years ago!
I read this for the first time in Eng Lit as a student. There were about 20 of us. Myself and two others loved this book – the others all gave up. They don’t know what they missed! I’m now going to re-read it and enjoy again 30 years later how good this book is! Ta!
You’re welcome! I also fell in love with it as a student, although I can’t remember a lot of it, I remember how much I loved it.
